Existential Pleasures
In The Existential Pleasures of Engineering, author Samuel Florman describes the meaning of engineering in society. For Peter, this work is creative and is an expression of our highest ideals. Engineers’ work directly impacts society – but can do so in positive or negative ways. By designing out waste and pollution from systems, and in fact designing systems that are regenerative and healing, we find engineering that meets the highest ideals of both the engineer and society. Amory Lovins refers to this aspiration as the “nonviolent overthrow of bad engineering.”
